Chocolate, coco, cioccolata, no matter what you call it the majority of people have a favorite. Whatever your preference there is no shortage in Union Square at Max Brenner’s restaurant in New York City. The real world Willy Wonka aka Max Brenner owner of the restaurant knows all about chocolate. For all chocolate lovers, this restaurant is conveniently located throughout the world such as Australia and the U.S. as well as in Singapore, the Philippines, and Israel.
A restaurant with the headline – chocolate by the bald man is sure to wake up your senses. It’s impossible to pick a favorite dessert from this restaurant. My most recent discovery was the melting chocolate truffle heart cake, served with a shot of ice cold chocolate milk this is definitely a crowd pleaser. One fork into the cake and the vanilla and chocolate center exploded on the plate. The creamy vanilla ice cream helped create a balance between the overwhelming chocolate tastes.
Not a desert person? Don’t fret Brenner has a wide variety of delicious breakfast foods, pizzas, burgers and salads too. If you’re in the mood for something filling try one of his succulent burgers. My personal favorite is the Brenner Burger, grilled to perfection, juicy and drenched in barbeque sauce, melted cheddar cheese, topped with lettuce, tomato and a sweet onion is sure to satisfy your appetite. Served with a side of waffle fries sprinkled with chili and cocoa powder to give it that extra kick and signature chocolate taste completes this one of a kind meal. Although they don’t follow the typical restaurant hours they are open until 2:00 a.m. Friday and Saturday and from 9am to midnight Mon –Thurs. So whether you want a midnight snack or an early morning sweet fix Max is your man.
Overall dining experience 8.5/10
Food was superb! The décor was charming complete with chocolate “pipes” and a chocolate bar. It should be known that this is a touristy restaurant. If you are looking for a quiet hole in the wall this is not for you. Max Brenner’s has an upbeat an energetic feel and yet you are still able to hear your conversation. The servers walk with alacrity and are helpful and friendly. It does get crowded on the weekends but I have never had to wait more than a half hour. I would suggest making a reservation ahead of time. The prices vary depending on your meal choice but are reasonable and if you are a chocolate lover it’s well worth the visit.
Want something to go? Takeout is available. And remember to visit the chocolate shop!
